Advice to anyone on Mastodon who's new.

Let me say this if you are on here because you think you're going to somehow convince your friends to migrate here or you think you will be an influencer like over there, I got news for you, prepare to be disappointed.

If you're willing to have patience though, try communicating with some of the people on the local and fed. timelines. Even the simplest thing like a compliment will mean a lot to someone and who knows you might make new friends.

Rhinos have no natural predators, Hyena may find opportunity to attack Rhino's calf, which is very rare, the only predators are human beings thanks to their horns.

Note: our tiny not-for-profit can afford to spin up new servers like this thanks to Eclips.is by @OpenTechFund and Greenhost.

OTF and Eclips.is are both under threat by the Trump administration.

okay, i've got a small Tracery/Node-based app for @selfcare that i need to put somewhere live so i can ping it on a regular basis to trigger a post on botsin.space.

would love advice on a good free/super cheap place to put it. looking at hosting it myself, but oooh never done that before!

i'm open to ideas on alternate solutions, rewriting it so it works without needing a ping (no idea how hard that is) or any other options.

I particularly enjoyed this bit of the Python Requests documentation:

"If the remote server is very slow, you can tell Requests to wait forever for a response, by passing `None` as a timeout value and then retrieving a cup of coffee."

Presumably the latter via HTCPCP/1.0.

** Easing the onboarding of new developers to the Fediverse **

The complexity and fragmented knowledge needed to develop new groundbreaking fediverse apps is the weak spot hampering the speed of Fediverse evolution.

What can we do to change this?

We may need a one-stop-shop to drill-down into all of this. A place that is maintained and up-to-date.

Omar Roth is stepping down as maintainer of the Invidious project and the invidio.us instance will be shutting down September 1st, 2020.

It seems to need programming contributors.
